Providing True Education . . .

We have continued to emphasize that St. Francis College Prep will provide students with a faith-based formative education.

As a result we’re often asked two questions, “What does that mean?” and “Why is that important?”

These are good questions that deserve good answers. So, today we will address the first question: what do we mean when we say that we will provide students with a faith-based formative education?

In short, St. Francis is partnering with parents to equip their children — our students — with truth in the application of knowledge during the last stages of their formative years.

But, let’s examine that explanation a bit further.

Unfortunately, high school years are often viewed solely as academic preparation for college and career. But, such a view is woefully shortsighted. These years are so much more.

Please don’t misunderstand. Yes, preparing for college and career is indeed an important aspect of a good high school education, however, such preparation is part and parcel of the whole.

To provide a good high school education we must remember that high school is a uniquely pivotal time. Students are looking back at their educational foundations and beginning to decide if and how there is truth in what they have learned and, if and how that truth should apply to how they live.

They are “forming” how they will apply their knowledge to practice. They are searching for truth. These are weighty decisions often impacting the rest of their lives.

In order to help students form their understanding of truth, St. Francis integrates the practice of their faith into their education. This, in turn, points them towards biblical truth — the foundation of truth.

St. Francis understands that our students are seeking solid footing. They desire authentic success. They need to know how to solve and endure difficulty. Like all of us, they yearn for a good and fulfilling life.

By beginning with this as the ultimate goal of education, St. Francis connects a solid footing, authentic success, endurance and fulfillment to students’ academic studies. St. Francis connects truth to learning and learning to living as our Creator intended.

The great author and theologian CS Lewis said, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”

Lewis understood that to see truth in all aspects of life, he must do so through his faith. St. Francis understands this necessity as well. This is a faith-based formative education.

This is true education.
